About this dataset

The 100 medicines with the highest indicative cost to NHS hospitals in England in each month, with the same month a year earlier alongside and the year-on-year change in cash and percentage terms. Derived from the NHSBSA Secondary Care Medicines Data, which covers medicines issued by NHS trusts, and updated monthly.

How it is derived

Secondary Care Medicines Data is aggregated to chemical substance level per month, summing indicative cost across every trust and presentation. The top 100 by cost in each month are kept, and the same substance's total for the month twelve months earlier is joined on to give the year-on-year change. Where a substance has no figure a year earlier the change columns are left empty rather than shown as a rise from zero.

What this data cannot tell you

  • 1 Indicative cost is an estimate based on national list prices applied to issued quantities. Hospitals buy through confidential national and regional contracts, often at very large discounts, so this is not hospital spend.
  • 2 The data records medicines issued from hospital pharmacies, not medicines administered to patients, and not homecare deliveries arranged separately.
  • 3 Coverage and data quality vary by trust and improve over the series. Early months are less complete.
  • 4 A substance can enter or leave the top 100 between months, so a row appearing for the first time does not mean prescribing started that month.
